Transient Lodging Tax (TLT) is a tax collected from lodging guests in Oregon. The revenue funds tourism promotion for the city and the surrounding area. The City of Albany collects for both the city and county and remits directly to the appropriate county on your behalf. Of the tax collected, 5% is returned to the lodging operators (you) as a service fee for the collection as a discount at the time of remittance.

Albany Municipal Code Chapter 3.14, in compliance with Oregon Revised Statutes Sections 320.300 to 320.350, require all lodging providers to register their short-term rental property under the name they transact business, their location(s) of business and other information to facilitate the collection of the Transient Lodging Tax (TLT) as required. The City of Albany partners with Granicus Host Compliance, a nationally recognized company that specializes in identifying and monitoring Short-Term Rental (STR) properties.

An important note for users of AirBnB, VRBO, and other third-party property managers:

If you are using a property manager or a third-party intermediary listing service (i.e. airbnb.com, vrbo.com, booking.com, etc.) to promote your property, please confirm with them if they are charging and remitting the taxes directly as part of the rental agreement.

While AirBnB and VRBO/HomeAway have agreed to collect and remit the taxes directly as a Lodging Tax Collector, it is ultimately the Lodging Provider’s (owner’s) responsibility to collect and remit Oregon, County and City of Albany TLT taxes.

Depending on the platform you are listing with, the intermediary may not collect or remit taxes to the city or other taxing authorities, so work with them to ensure you are in compliance with the remittance of the TLT taxes.
